Intent

At St. Joseph’s Primary School we intend to provide a Design and Technology curriculum that interests and develops the learning of our pupils. We acknowledge that Design and Technology is an important part of our broad and balanced curriculum.

Throughout the Design and Technology curriculum we have made cross curricular links particularly with History e.g. creating a Viking shield. The intention of the Design and Technology curriculum is for children to build and apply knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design products for a specific purpose.

Our pupils will develop an understanding of the importance of making ongoing changes and improvements during the making stages. They will also develop an understanding of critiquing, evaluating and testing ideas and products. The children will recognise and apply the principles of nutrition and health and how to prep and cook healthy dishes using a range of techniques.

Implementation

Each class will deliver design and technology projects with a clear structure. They will undertake a construction topic and a food topic. The process: research, design, make and evaluate will be undertaken in each unit of DT work.

There will be clear and appropriate cross curricular links to underpin learning in multiple areas across the curriculum giving the children opportunities to learn life skills and apply those skill to hands on situations in purposeful contexts.

The teaching and implementation of DT id based on the National Curriculum goals which provide a well-structured approach to this subject. The children will also experience collaborative learning as they will be asked to work as part of a team, learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.

Impact

We will aspire for all children to enjoy and have confidence in DT. Children will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of DT when using tools or skills in other areas of the curriculum and outside of school. The formative assessment of children’s learning in DT are an ongoing monitoring process of children’s understanding, knowledge and skills. The assessment is used to inform differentiation, support and challenge required for all children.
