Intent
At St. Joseph’s, we want our children to leave our school with good understanding of
their physical and mental health and well-being. They should also be able to
recognise the immense benefits of sport and physical activity to help them to make
healthy life choices. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning
opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in
developing life skills. As a school we want our children to understand the importance
of cooperating and collaborating with others to demonstrate effective teamwork,
understanding fair play, etiquette and healthy competition. Our curriculum aim is to
cater to the development of the whole child by focusing on their social, physical,
personal, creative, cognitive and fitness state.
Implementation
Within our PE curriculum we have embedded the use of Real PE. This helps us to
provide a challenging and enjoyable learning environment for our pupils. This
approach is used from the Early Years Foundation Stage all the way through the
school to the higher end of Key Stage Two.
The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year
and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
Pupils participate in two hours of high quality PE every week, which are designed to
appeal to all children of all abilities.
We use our PE premium funding to allow children to be taught by highly skilled
coaches and for teachers to use this time to observe and learn fundamental teaching
skills.
Our PE Curriculum is designed to promote the development of children’s confidence,
resilience and appreciation of their own strengths and weaknesses.
We also aim to build a good level of teamwork and sportsmanship to enable children
to support their peers in a positive way.
Activities are tailored to the children’s interests, particularly in EYFS, and are
constantly reviewed to encourage all children to get involved in extra-curricular activities and physical activity outside of school. We also host after school sports
clubs to aid this.
Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This
is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical
development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and
leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
Children in Class 3 swim once a week during the Spring Term. We also give children
further swimming sessions if they are unable to swim 25m when moving up into
Class 4.
Impact
Pupils leave St. Joseph’s with good levels of physical and mental health and
wellbeing across many areas of the curriculum. We help motivate children to
participate in a variety of sports in and outside of school. The children learn to take
responsibility for their own health and fitness, from our teaching. The impact of our
PE curriculum is to develop the whole development of the child, not only the
physical, and motivate them to use these skills to lead a happy and healthy life.
