At St Joseph’s, we use the Spelling Shed Scheme throughout the school, to teach the children all the spelling rules and patterns they need to understand by the time the leave Year 6.
Generally, spelling lessons will follow a familiar pattern. The only difference throughout the year groups is the amount of time we will spend on each section. Our older children in Class 4 for example will be able to concentrate for longer periods of time than our younger children. The lesson sequences are planned to systematically build upon acquired knowledge.
Each week a set of words is provided, these words are examples of the spelling pattern to be learnt.
- Session 1: Revise and Introduction
- Session 2: Main Teaching Input
- Session 3: Independent and Consolidation Objectives.
Revise
Each lesson contains a revision section. Children will revisit sounds and spelling patterns from earlier weeks in the scheme.
Introduction
In the introduction, children will be acquainted with the words of the week. There will be an explanation of how the words are linked. The lists are organised by spelling patterns, sounds or affixes.
Main Teaching Input
In this section, the children will explore the words of the week. They will examine aspects such as the number of syllables, tricky sounds and the morphology of the words. There are a range of activities that the children can complete to help them understand and remember the words and rules.
Independent
The Independent section is designed to be carried out by the children with minimal instruction. They can be carried out immediately after the teaching input in class during an extended spelling session or can be carried out later in an additional session or for home study.
Consolidation
In the Consolidation section, a recap of the objectives will be carried out.
